Welcome to our in-depth exploration of pool resurfacing, pool refinishing, and paver services. Whether you’re looking to revitalize an existing pool deck or outdoor space or embark on a new paver installation project, understanding the nuances of materials, techniques, and costs is essential.

In this guide, we’ll break down the offerings, including pool resurfacing and refinishing options, new paver installations for decks, driveways, and more, as well as complementary features like outdoor kitchens, retaining walls, sunshelves, and fire bowls.

We’ll also delve into material comparisons—such as interlocking pavers, natural stone, marble, and porcelain—to help you make informed decisions.

By the end, you’ll have a clear picture of site preparation, installation methods, and pricing structures to transform your pool area and property into a functional and aesthetically pleasing oasis.

This content provides detailed explanations, pros and cons, step-by-step processes, and real-world applications. All our paver and resurfacing services come with a 10-year warranty on materials and 5 years on labor, aligning with our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Let’s start with the fundamentals of pool resurfacing and pool refinishing.

Understanding Pool Resurfacing and Pool Refinishing: The Foundation of Renewal

Pool resurfacing and pool refinishing are cost-effective ways to breathe new life into worn-out pool decks and surrounding surfaces without the need for a complete tear-out and replacement. These services are particularly popular for pool decks where daily wear, weather exposure, chlorine, and settling can lead to cracks, fading, or unevenness.

We offer a project size of 1,400 square feet for pool resurfacing and refinishing, priced at $28 per square foot, making it an accessible yet premium option for homeowners seeking lasting results.

Why Choose Pool Resurfacing and Pool Refinishing? Pool resurfacing and refinishing aren’t just about aesthetics—they’re about safety, longevity, and enhancing your pool experience. Slippery or cracked surfaces around pools can pose serious hazards, while faded finishes detract from your backyard’s appeal. By overlaying new materials or refinishing existing ones, you can achieve a like-new appearance with enhanced durability and slip resistance. This process typically involves assessing the current substrate, preparing the surface, and applying a new layer that bonds seamlessly.

Pros include lower costs compared to full pool remodels, quicker turnaround times (often completed in a few days to a week), and minimal disruption to your pool usage. Cons might involve limitations if the underlying structure is severely damaged, in which case a full replacement could be necessary.

For instance, if your pool deck is made of regular brick set in sand, resurfacing can reinforce it against shifting soils while maintaining proper drainage.

The Pool Resurfacing and Refinishing Process Step by Step

  1. Site Assessment: The first step is thorough site work, where professionals evaluate the composition of your existing pool deck or surface. Is it a regular brick set in sand? Concrete slab? This determines the best approach. For sand-set pavers, checks for settling or erosion are essential.
  2. Preparation and Scarification: If dealing with a concrete slab, scarification is key. This involves roughening the surface to ensure proper adhesion and waterproofing, critical around pools to prevent water infiltration that could cause heaving or cracking in freeze-thaw cycles.
  3. Handling Thickness Differences: A common issue arises when removing old materials that are thicker than the new ones. If the difference is no more than an inch, it’s manageable with just a footer adjustment. For greater variances, a dry pack set using Portland cement (without water, mimicking a concrete-like base) is recommended to level the area without introducing excess moisture.
  4. Application Methods: Over concrete, a mud set or thin set with Portland cement is used, often with an additional layer to prevent mineral leaching, which can stain surfaces over time. This ensures a stable, long-lasting bond suited to pool environments.
  5. Finishing Touches: Once applied, the new surface is sealed for protection against UV rays, pool chemicals, stains, and water damage.

Pool resurfacing and pool refinishing costs are straightforward: $28 per square foot, with a 1,400 square foot. For a standard 1,400-square-foot pool deck, this starts at $39,200, scaling based on materials and complexity.

Premium finishes may reach $45,000–$60,000 for larger or more intricate projects. Backed by our 10-year material warranty and 5-year labor warranty.

Expanding on this, consider environmental factors specific to pools. In regions with high humidity or frequent rains, waterproofing becomes paramount.

Scarification creates a textured profile (CSP 3–5 ideal for overlays), ensuring the new material grips without peeling even under constant water exposure.

Real-world example: A homeowner with a faded, cracked pool deck opted for refinishing with porcelain tiles. The old sand-set bricks were removed, the base scarified, and a thin-set layer applied. The result? A slip-resistant, modern surface resistant to pool chemicals, boosting property value by 5–10%.

New Paver Installations: Building from the Ground Up

For those starting fresh, expanding pool areas, or adding new outdoor spaces, our paver installations offer endless customization.

Key Offerings in New Installations Deck Pavers: Ideal for poolside or entertainment areas, providing a cool, non-slip surface. Driveway Pavers: Durable against vehicle weight, with interlocking designs for stability.

Outdoor Kitchens: Integrated with pavers for seamless flow, including counters, grills, and seating.

Retaining Walls: Often paired with pavers for flower beds or terraced gardens, preventing soil erosion.

Sunshelves and Fire Bowls: Sunshelves (shallow lounging areas in pools) can be edged with pavers, while fire bowls add ambiance when integrated by pool specialists.

These features enhance usability—imagine a pool deck that drains efficiently or an outdoor kitchen where pavers form the base for appliances.

Material Choices: Density, Durability, and Aesthetics. Choosing the right material is crucial for pool-adjacent installations.

Interlocking Pavers: Priced at $13–$17 per square foot. Concrete-based, less dense, with a potential 25-year lifespan. Natural Stone: $20–$24 per square foot. Durable with natural variations.

Marble: Dense but susceptible to cracking; elegant for high-end decks.

Porcelain: The densest option, outperforming others in resistance to fading, stains, cracks, and pool chemicals. Costs from $19 per square foot.

Overall, new installations average $28 per square foot, including materials and labor. All backed by 10-year material and 5-year labor warranties.

Pros and cons: Interlocking are budget-friendly but need re-sanding. Natural stone offers beauty but can be slippery wet. Porcelain resists water absorption (<0.5%), perfect for poolsides.

Installation Techniques for Longevity New installs begin with site work: Excavating, compacting sub-base, and adding layers.

Sand Set: For permeable drainage. Dry Pack Set: Firm base for height adjustments. Mud Set/Thin Set: Over concrete to prevent leaching.

Footers prevent crumbling, especially around pools.

A typical 1,200-square-foot deck install costs $33,600 at $28/sq ft. Add-ons like outdoor kitchens cost $5,000–$10,000.

Design principles: Permeable options reduce runoff; patterns add interest.

Case study: Porcelain paver driveway near a pool—deep sub-base, interlocking edges for stability. 2,000 SQRFT at $56,000, lasting 50+ years.

Integrating Specialty Features: Sunshelves, Fire Bowls, and More

Sunshelves: Shallow pool platforms edged with pavers. Add $1,000–$3,000, edging $15–$20/sq ft. Waterproofing essential.

Fire Bowls: Gas/propane on heat-resistant pavers (porcelain ideal). $500–$2,000 each.

Outdoor Kitchens and Retaining Walls: Full setups $10,000–$30,000. Walls $20–$30/sq ft face for flower integration.

Professional, efficient installation with a good eye for the aesthetic.

We had rats in the neighborhood. We were going to install a kick plate and chair rail to secure our pool cage. We were not happy with that as we had that installation at our prior home and thought it looked cheap and didn’t hold up well.

I googled “best rat barrier for pool cage” and found screenIt in southwest Florida. After several discussions with the owner, exchanging pictures of their solution and getting a quote, we agreed to move forward.

Even though I was in NE Florida and there was a 6 hour drive, our installer arrived in less than a week from my initial call. The installation took about 8 hours and was flawless. No mess or unexpected issues. We are so happy with the end product and would highly recommend screenIt. See photos below.

ScreenIT did an amazing job removing our old pool cage and installing a new one. The quality of the materials they use is excellent and over-engineered to withstand the Florida environment. Their installation workmanship and professionalism is outstanding. We never thought we needed "Picture Window" framing, but now that we have it we would not want to live without it. ScreenIT's post installation support is also excellent. They have been quick to address any minor issues that popped up after install.

All in all, a great experience.
